Critical Food Studies seminars launch the new Association for Critical Food Studies Aotearoa New Zealand (ACFSANZ)

A series of seminars dedicated to Critical Food Studies in Aotearoa has been running at Te Herenga Waka—VIctora University of Wellington’s Stout Research Centre for New Zealand Studies to launch the Association for Critical Food Studies Aotearoa New Zealand (ACFSANS).

Entitled Kai Aotearoa - Critical Food Studies in Aotearoa, this series provides the occasion for researchers, students, professionals, activists, and enthusiasts to critically explore and assess the state of Food Studies in New Zealand.

The first three seminars featured Professor Annie Potts (Co-Director of the New Zealand Centre for Human-Animal Studies, Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury) speaking on the topic of “Kapa Kaiota: Intersectional Vegan Studies in Aotearoa New Zealand,” Dr Rebekah Graham (National Executive Officer for Parents of Vision Impaired NZ) speaking on “Food Insecurity in a Time of Plenty,” and Associate Professor Lisa Te Morenga (Research Centre for Hauora and Health, Massey University | Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa), Joe McLeod (Executive Chef, Life of Kai, Whakaata Māori), Asher Regan (PhD Candidate, Massey University | Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa) speaking on “Mātauranga Kai.”

The next seminar is on Wednesday 27 September and will feature Jacinta ‘Jacs’ Forde (Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington) giving a talk entitled ““May I have seconds?”: A Toheroa Tale.”

The final seminar in this inaugural series will be a panel discussion on Wednesday 4 October, where Dr Carolyn Morris (Massey University | Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa), Dr Amir Sayadabdi (Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington), and Fiona Rogge (Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington) will speak on the topic of “Food Studies in Aotearoa.
